Mr. L. Glen Neikirk, 91, of Somerset, KY, passed away on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital following a short illness.
Glen is survived by his 3 sons, Fred Neikirk of Somerset, Lloyd (Brenda) Neikirk of Nicholasville, KY., Bill (Linda) Neikirk of Somerset; 9 grandchildren, Carrie (Todd) Barshaw of Saginaw, MI, Lee Neikirk of Somerset, Rachel (Jeff) Axon of Frankfort, KY., Courtney Neikirk of Midway, KY., Tasha Graham Neikirk of Nicholasville, KY., Holly (Jeremy) Lankster of Lexington, KY., SPC 4 Rusty Neikirk of Fort Hood, Texas, Randy Neikirk of Somerset, Matthew (Holly) Neikirk of Somerset; and 7 Great-Grandchildren; He is also survived by a brother, Bob Neikirk and a sister, Lena Neikirk of Somerset.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Mary Virginia Snyder Neikirk, Brothers; Homer, Roy, Ray, and Russell Neikirk and one sister, Lucille Quiggens.
Glen retired after 45 years as the Somerset District Manager for Commonwealth Life Insurance Company. During his career, he won several top awards from Commonwealth. In addition, he was selected by the Association of Insurance Agents in 1985 as the State of Kentucky Agent of the Year.
Glen was a dedicated community leader, having served as president of the United Way, Somerset Chamber of Commerce and Industrial Foundation. He was the founder and a charter member of the Pleasant Hill Water District, and presided as chairman of the Board for 35 years. He was active throughout his life in national and local Republican politics.
He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the US Navy as quarter master (Helsman) aboard LCI 489 ON D-Day in the invasion of Normandy landing troops on Omaha Beach. After the invasion, he was sent to the Naval Officer’s School at Columbia University in New York City where upon graduation he was granted a commission as an Ensign and assigned to serve on the Battleship USS Wisconsin in the Pacific Theater from who’s deck he observed the surrender of the Japanese Empire in Tokyo Bay.
He was a long time member of the First Baptist Church.
Visitation will be at the Pulaski Funeral Home on Friday, September 3, 2010 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Per Glen’s request, his funeral services will be held at his farm at 290 McKee Circle Road at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 4, 2010 followed by his burial in the Bishop Cemetery. A military service will be conducted by American Legion Post 38.
