Doris grew up in Somerset, Kentucky, and graduated from Somerset High School. She later received her B.A. in Sociology from the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. Much of her career was focused on Business and Real Estate. She took great pride in her work, and it showed, but her career was the least interesting part of her life.
Above all, to those who knew her, she was a great, loyal, lifelong friend. She had tremendous love for her furry friends, too! Always looking for an excuse to have a party and dance, she became an avid line dancer and loved going to concerts to see live acts play when she lived in Houston and Atlanta. She was a huge fan of Kentucky Wildcat basketball, and enjoyed the occasional nip of Wild Turkey, usually around Christmastime, and always on Derby Day.
More often than not, she was the most knowledgeable person in the room, as anyone who ever played Trivial Pursuit with her can attest. She loved to travel, too, especially to New York City and Northern California, and made frequent trips to Las Vegas and the Caribbean. A real patriot and lifelong Democrat, Doris volunteered for presidential campaigns, a presidential convention, and received personal thanks for her work from civil rights activist and statesman, John Lewis.
Doris was a quintessential extrovert, with an inexhaustible curiosity. She was interested in everything, but she was truly interested in people, what they did for work, and what they did for fun. When Doris was spending time with you, you were the most important person in the world. She asked you what you thought about things and how you felt about things, and most importantly, she listened to your answers. In that regard, those of us who knew her are never going to meet another person like her. She was one of a kind, and she will be dearly missed.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Lowell and Mae Farmer, and her brother, James Farmer. She is survived by her sisters, Lois Farmer and Betty Sears, her nephew, John Daws, her nieces, Tiffany Keith (Dale Keith) and Samantha Farmer, her great-nephew, Elijah Eastham, and her great-niece, Hattie Mae Keith
