James Richards

September 22, 1937 — December 4, 2020

On Friday, December 4, 2020, Staff Sargent James Ray Richards, (Jimmy Ray) age 83, of Somerset, Kentucky stepped over into Heaven where he is now at peace and rejoicing with loved ones who preceded him in death. It says in scripture, ‘Oh, death where is your sting?’

On September 22, 1937, Jimmy Ray was born in Somerset, Ky to James Cecil Richards and Delza Wheeler Richards. Jimmy Ray grew up in the home of his grandparents, McKinnley and Bessie Wheeler in Huffaker, Kentucky, a small community just outside of Somerset. At a young age, Jimmy Ray joined the Navy, and afterwards enlisting in the Army. He later enlisted in the United States Air Force where he retired as a Staff Sargent. During his time in the Air Force he was able to see many parts of the world when living on various bases with his family. After his retirement, he drove for several trucking companies furthering his discovery of places far and wide all across America.

Jimmy Ray was preceded in death by his parents, James Ceil and Delza Wheeler Richards and one daughter, Kelley Sue Richards of Iowa.

He is survived by his children Pamela (Gary) Woodall and Cynthia Richards (Kris Hahn) Sharon (Richards) Van Orman, Christopher (Gloria) Richards and Andrew Ervine. Numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his siblings: Phyllis Richards (Jim) Ewing; Robert (Ramona) Richards; Pauline Richards (Neal) Hadley; James [Eddie] Richards (Elana) and Sandra (Matt) Davis.

Both daughters, Pamela and Cynthia, will host a Memorial service for their father on Friday, December 18, 2020 beginning at 2:00 pm. This Memorial will be held at Victory Christian Fellowship.

He was a member of the Baptist church in Jamestown Tennessee. Some of his favorite characters of the Bible, other than Jesus, were Moses and David. He particularly liked David because he was a warrior. He also enjoyed singing ‘I’ll Fly Away’ and ‘Amazing Grace’. Numerous times he could be heard quoting, Numbers 6: 24-26.
