March 31, 1941 - May 23, 2026
It is with deep love and gratitude that we remember the life of John Toby, who left a legacy for all who met him.
He was born on Grundy Road in Shopville, Kentucky to Barnett and Mildred Toby. John grew up on a farm and learned the value of hard work, which he instilled in his children and grandchildren.
John graduated from Shopville High School, attended Lindsey Wilson College, and was part of the first graduating class of Somerset Community College. He married Eva Mae Stokes on July 31st, 1961, who precedes him in death.
Together, they built a life with three children, Dr. John Mark & (Cathy) Toby, Susan & (Russ) Adams, and Steven & (Kim) Toby. John and Eva have five grandchildren, Cody Tomlison, Carly & (Jay) Davidson, Boon & (Amya) Tomlison, Daniel & (Shawna) Toby, and Andrea Toby. They also have ten great-grandchildren.
John had many career achievements as a regional manager for Montgomery Ward in Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky, until 1978 when he moved his family back to his home place on Grundy Road. He then became a successful John Deere industrial equipment salesman and manager. In his 40s, he became self-employed and owned his own sawmills and post mill until his retirement.
Family was at the heart of everything John did. He was a provider. He created a home where love, laughter, and support were constants. He was the tooth puller, the break-up consoler, the listening ear, the vacation planner, and the bank. He was full of wisdom and wit. John's legacy will live on in the stories he passed along. He was a member of Rock Lick Baptist Church. However, in later years, he attended Barnesburg Baptist Church with his family. He was known as the Mayor of Grundy with the "red coat" at the senior center.
