Mary Lou Gammage, born February 13, 1945, in Du Quoin, Illinois, passed away on May 4, 2026, leaving behind a life filled with simple joys. As a child, she moved with her family to Arcadia, Florida, where she grew up and graduated from DeSoto County High School. In November 1964, Mary married Leland Duncan Gammage. Together they raised two children and shared 58 years of marriage and family life.
Mary worked in secretarial positions before beginning a career with the State of Florida prison system. She worked at DeSoto Correctional Institution before moving to Marianna to continue her career at Jackson Correctional Institution. There, she worked in the classification office, supporting daily operations through administrative and clerical work until her retirement. She enjoyed shopping, reading, music, mystery movies and television shows, and especially loved classic rock. Mary also cared deeply for animals and volunteered with Partners for Pets animal rescue.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Leland Duncan Gammage, who passed away on April 14, 2023. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Charles Nicholas Miller and Mary Louise Miller, as well as her brothers, Charles Joseph Miller, Harry Miller, and Gregory Miller.
She is survived by her son, Simeon (Anita); her daughter, Teresa (Doug) Leath; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one great-grandchild expected later this year.
Graveside services were held in a private ceremony at Oak Ridge Cemetery with family members in attendance.
