Russell Hargis, 86, of the Dykes Community, passed away on September 8, 2025, at Somerset Nursing and Rehab surrounded by his family.
Russell was born to Barney and Myrtle (Phelps) Hargis on October 24, 1938. He was married to Betty (Mounce) Hargis who preceded him in death. They have two daughters: Sylvia (Jerry) Whitaker and Tammy (Tracy) Farmer. They have three grandchildren: Jessica (Zeke) Reynolds, Justin Whitaker, and Trevor (Mallory) Farmer, as well as one great granddaughter, Riley Reynolds.
Russell worked for the Pulaski County Road Department for many years as a grader operator before serving his community as the forth District Magistrate. Russell and Betty enjoyed the wonderful fellowship, good food and listening to the gospel and bluegrass music that raised the roof at old Sear's School.
Russell was a farmer his whole life and was a avid coon, rabbit, squirrel and deer hunter. He was one of the founding members of the Long Hollow Coon Club. Russell was a self taught musician and could play any string instrument. He sang and played music in the bluegrass/ gospel group The Long Hollow Ramblers, which was started by him and his brother, Coy.
Russell was preceded in death by his siblings, Shirley Wells, Eletha Gilbert, Coy Hargis, Floyd Hargis, Jewell Hargis, and Merrell Hargis.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, September 11, 2025, at 1:00 PM with Bro. Bill Hargis and Bro. Raymond Ridner officiating.
The family will receive friends on Thursday September 11, 2025 from 11:00 AM till time for services.
Burial will follow in the Hargis Family Cemetery.
The family would like to send special thanks to Somerset nursing and rehab as well as Dr. Robert Drake and Hospice of Lake Cumberland for all the exceptional care that they gave Mr. Hargis.
The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Hospice of Lake Cumberland in memory of Mr. Russell Hargis.
